Windows 10 can now turn your laptop or Personal computer into a wireless hotspot.
It has a unique feature called “Hosted Network” this feature allows you to turn your PC into a wireless hotspot.
This feature was not used by most of the Windows 10 users. Because they think it’s complicated but it will be easy if you follow a few steps.
Hosted Network is an advanced feature comes with the Network shell command line utility. Although this feature was introduced in Windows 7 but it’s not that success with Windows 7, but this feature will work well in windows 10.
By this feature, you can create a “Virtual Wi-Fi” which is a software-based wireless access point.
Now, Let’s walk through the process of setting up a hotspot on your PC and also how to disable it when you are done with it.
Before that let’s check whether your system has an ability to create virtual Wi-Fi by using hosted network feature.
How to check your PC whether it supports the Hosted networks in Windows 10:
Firstly, to go through with the process, you’ll have to open your command prompt with administrator rights.
To do this, we have two easy process
First, go to start, Type cmd and right click on it and run it as administrator.
If you like shortcuts then just use “Windows key + X” and select Command prompt (Admin).
Let’s check whether your PC supports this feature or not:
Type: NETSH WLAN shows drivers in cmd. And hit enter.
If the output shows Hosted Network supported: Yes, Then you are ready to go with this process, If not check other softwares like mspot, hotspot, etc.
Now, we’re ready to go so let’s begin the process.
How to create a wireless hotspot in Windows 10:
Creating a wireless hotspot in Windows 10 is relatively easy so don’t be scared of command, first of all, let’s get through few command for your knowledge.
Ssid= Here you must give a name for your identity. Key= here key is a password you want to set.
Now, you have already opened cmd so, just enter the following command:
NETSH WLAN set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=your_ssid key=your_passpharse
I already mentioned above here “ssid” refers to the name you want to give to your hotspot and key refers to the password. (Note: Password has to be at least 8 characters in length).
After creating your hosted network, you have to activate it,
To activate it type this command in cmd: NETSH WLAN start hostednetwork
We have successfully activated the wifi but how to share internet connection with that hosted network.
Let’s get through them,
To browse the internet from your wifi you must share the internet access for that you should do some basic stuff:
Use the windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the power user menu, now select a network connection.
Simply ask Cortana for network connections.
Use the windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open settings and type “network connections”
Next, Right-click the network adapter with an internet connection – This could be either Ethernet or wireless network adapter – and select properties.
Now you will get a new tab like this:
Click the sharing tab.
Check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection option, Now by checking this, you are granting permission for others to access.
From the “home networking connection, drop-down menu” Select the Microsoft hosted virtual adapter. And then just click ok to finish. After hitting ok now, you should be able to see and connect any wireless capable device to newly created software access point and with access to the internet.
Until this point, we have successfully created a wifi hotspot and shared our internet connection with others now “how to stop your wifi hotspot”.
If you want to stop other devices to connect to your Wi-Fi temporarily then you can simply type this command in the command prompt and hit enter:
NETSH WLAN stop hostednetwork
If you want to restart the connection at any time you can simply replace the stop with a start, that’s it.
NETSH WLAN start hostednetwork
Similarly, there are other commands to enable or disable a wireless hosted network:
NETSH WLAN set hostednetwork mode=allow. NETSH WLAN set hostednetwork mode= disallow.
If you want to change the name or password of your hosted network then you can simply change them by following commands:
NETSH WLAN set hostednetwork ssid= your_new_ssid NETSH WLAN set hostednetwork key= Your new password.
If you want to view the currently hosted network settings then you can easily do it by two commands that are:
NETSH WLAN show hosted network.
And the second is
NETSH WLAN show hostednetwork settings=security.
How to disable Hosted network in Windows 10:
Microsoft doesn’t allow you to delete permanently this setting allows you disable it, but if you want to remove it permanently, then you modify your Registry.
So, don’t try to change the registry if you are really sure about what you can do with registry then you can but its better not to mess up with the registry.
- Open start menu, do a search for Regedit, hit enter and click ok to open registry with admin rights.
2.Scroll down the following path in the registry:
Right-click the hosted network settings, select delete and click yes to confirm the deletion.
